We needed a getaway and decided to head to Michigan over Memorial Day Weekend. This time we decided to stay at the Looking Glass Inn Bed & Breakfast in Grand Haven. The inn was adorable with a fantastic location. It was up on a bluff across the street from beach. There were 79 steps up to the inn. We hiked them several times but also enjoyed using the tram up the hill.
We arrived on Friday evening and had dinner at an old favorite, Fricano’s Pizza. It’s super thin crust with cheesy burnt edges. The only thing on menu is pizza. No appetizers, no salad. Pizza. They have been around since 1949 so you know it’s good!
The next morning we walked to the beach and to the end of the pier before breakfast. It was a nice jaunt and good to get some steps in. The innkeeper had been called out of town for a family emergency and an “inn sitter” was running the B & B in his place. She was very friendly but not a gourmet chef. Breakfast was just fine, but not a highlight.
After breakfast we headed out to explore Grand Haven. There are a lot of cute shops. We picked up chocolate covered blueberries and a blueberry spoon rest (actually a soap dish, lol) from an “everything blueberry” store. We decided to have lunch at the local VFW’s Rib Competition. We tried every variety before choosing our favorite to vote on!
On Sunday we headed to Holland and Saugatuck. In Holland we bought chocolate covered cherries from an “everything cherry” store, LOL. We also bought a beautiful wooden salad bowl and some yummy cheese from a Dutch themed store.
Saugatuck is a cute little spot reminiscent of a seaside resort. They have a harbor with some beautiful boats. We had lunch overlooking the docks. It was beautiful weather and nice to sit outside listening to music. We both had lake perch sandwiches. We did not get any photos of the nice harbor views, or our lunches. We did, however, get a pic of the delicious, monstrous pretzel.
When we got back from exploring Holland and Saugatuck we parked ourselves on the deck at the B & B. They had comfy outdoor furniture, the weather was beautiful and the view was the best. We drank a bottle of wine and ordered more pizza. This time from Jet’s Pizza. We have never had this before but had heard of it from a friend. We got the 8 Corners pizza. Soooo good with crispy, chewy edges. We hung out with other guests waiting for the sunset. It did not disappoint. It was a short getaway, but so nice to just get away.
