We went to Octoberfest last weekend and had a great time! We devoured German specialties, sampled delicious beer, wine and spirits, hung out by the fire and browsed quaint shops. All of this fun was had, not in Munich, but in Hermann, Missouri. Hermann is a small town on the Missouri River about an hour west of St. Louis.
This was our 4th annual trip to Hermann in October. Each time we have stayed at the welcoming Captain Wohlt Inn, a delightful bed and breakfast. The breakfasts are yummy and they give everyone a pack of the BEST cookies!
We arrived at lunch time on our first day and headed to Stone Hill Winery for a wine tasting and German lunch at Vintage Restaurant. Our favorite wine was the Dry Rosé. We decided to order a bottle with lunch. Lunch was the German trio which included schnitzel, sauerbraten, and a sausage, as well as red cabbage, German potato salad and a side of sauerkraut. My mouth is watering as I type this!
After lunch we headed to the Captain Wohlt to check in. The proprietor, Brant, is very friendly and check-in was smooth. Our room was comfortable and clean. The photos below show the room, part of the lawn and fire pit, and a view from the street looking up to the larger lawn. There are several areas with fire pits and comfy seating to relax and listen to music.
After checking in, it was an easy walk to “downtown”. We walked along the Missouri riverfront, stopped in to Fernweh distillery for some spirits, checked out the Wurst Haus and their sausage selection, listened to a German band and watched the dancers in their lederhosen, heard a young guitarist at the Bank Bar while enjoying pumpkin spice martinis and ended the night with a great pizza.
Here’s a video of the German band, complete with yodeling.

The next morning we woke up to a hearty breakfast. We started with fruit, yogurt and granola topped with garden fresh mint. This was followed by brioche french toast with caramelized apples, bourbon maple syrup and local sausage from the Wurst Haus. It was scrumptious! Here are some photos of breakfast and the packet of cookies.
We spent the day walking around starting some early Christmas shopping. There are some cute shops and a couple of interesting antique shops. We took a long nap, hung out by the fire pit drinking a bottle of Hellbender-a Stone Hill red blend (very drinkable), snacked on some pulled pork tacos prepared by Brant then headed to Wings A Blazin’ for wings and Steelers football before calling it a night.
The next morning, after another delicious breakfast of fresh fruit, muffins, quiche and more sausage, we headed home. But no trip to Hermann is complete without a stop at Trader Joe’s in St. Louis!
